iPhone Filters 101: How Filters Can Improve Your Photography
There is a point in photography when you begin to realize that taking better photographs isn’t necessarily about buying a better camera. Sometimes, it’s about learning how to control the camera you already have. That might mean changing your composition, moving your position, changing your exposure, or simply waiting for the right light. But there is another tool that can give you a surprising amount of control over the photograph you’re creating: a filter. And today, that doesn’t necessarily mean carrying a traditional camera and a bag full of accessories. With the right filter system, many of the same photographic techniques can be used with the camera that’s probably already in your pocket—the iPhone.
When I talk about photographic filters, I’m not talking about the digital filters we apply after taking a photograph. I’m talking about physical optical filters placed in front of the lens. Their job is to alter the light before it reaches the camera’s sensor. That may sound like a relatively simple concept, but it can have a significant effect on the final photograph. A filter can help control reflections, reduce the amount of light entering the camera, or create a particular visual effect that would otherwise be difficult to achieve. The important thing is to understand that a filter isn’t something you should automatically put on your camera because you happen to own one. A filter is a tool, and the best way to use any tool is to first understand what problem you’re trying to solve.
The Three Basic Types of Filters
There are many different types of photographic filters available today, but for someone just getting started, I like to think about them in three broad categories: filters that control reflections, filters that control light, and filters that create specific creative effects. Each serves a different purpose, and understanding those purposes is far more important than simply memorizing a list of filter names.
One of the most useful filters in photography is the polarizing filter, often called a CPL, or circular polarizer. Its primary advantage is its ability to control certain reflections. This is particularly valuable when photographing water, glass, foliage, and other reflective surfaces. Unlike many adjustments made in post-processing, a polarizer allows you to control those reflections while you’re actually taking the photograph. By rotating the filter, you can change the amount of polarized reflected light reaching the camera and determine how strong the effect will be.
Imagine walking beside a lake on a beautiful day. You see rocks and vegetation underneath the surface and want to include that detail in your photograph. The problem is that the surface of the water is reflecting the sky. Your eyes may be able to see through the water, but the camera records a strong reflection instead. Rotate a polarizing filter and you may be able to significantly reduce that reflection, revealing details beneath the surface that were previously hidden. This is one of those situations where the filter isn’t simply making the photograph “better” in some vague sense. It’s allowing you to photograph something that the reflection was preventing you from seeing clearly.
The same principle can be useful when photographing buildings with large areas of glass. Modern architecture can be visually fascinating, but glass can also create an enormous amount of reflection. Instead of photographing the building itself, you may end up photographing the sky, trees, surrounding buildings, or even yourself reflected in the glass. A polarizer can sometimes reduce those reflections and give you considerably more control over what the camera sees. It won’t eliminate every reflection, and its effectiveness depends on your position and the angle of the light, but under the right conditions, the difference can be dramatic.
Polarizers can also be useful when photographing vegetation. Wet leaves and foliage can produce bright, shiny reflections that distract from the natural color and detail of the scene. By reducing some of those reflections, a polarizer can make the foliage appear richer and more saturated. Again, the filter isn’t actually creating color. Instead, it’s reducing reflected light that was washing out the color that was already there.
The second major category is the neutral density filter, or ND filter. If a polarizer is primarily about controlling reflections, an ND filter is about controlling the amount of light entering the camera. I sometimes describe an ND filter as being similar to putting sunglasses over the lens. The difference, of course, is that the ND filter is designed to reduce light in a controlled and predictable way without intentionally changing the color of the scene.
Why would you want less light? Because sometimes you want to use a slower shutter speed than the available light would normally allow. This becomes especially interesting when photographing moving water. Consider a waterfall in bright daylight. You may want to create that beautiful soft, flowing appearance where the individual droplets disappear and the water becomes a smooth, almost silky element within the composition. The problem is that there may simply be too much light. Even at a low ISO and a small aperture, your camera may not be able to use a shutter speed slow enough to produce the effect you want. Adding an ND filter reduces the amount of light reaching the sensor and allows you to extend the exposure.
This is where a filter becomes more than an exposure accessory. It becomes a creative tool. A fast shutter speed freezes motion, while a slow shutter speed records movement over time. That difference can completely change the character of a photograph. Water that looked chaotic and busy can become smooth and simplified. Waves can turn into soft patterns. Moving clouds can stretch across the sky. People walking through a city can become blurred, reducing the visual clutter of a busy street. The filter gives you the ability to manipulate how motion is represented in the final image.
That is an important concept in photography. A long exposure isn’t necessarily about making something blurry just because blurry looks interesting. It’s about deciding whether recording movement over time helps communicate what you want the viewer to see. Sometimes the movement adds energy and drama. Other times, it removes distracting detail and creates a much simpler composition. The filter simply gives you the control to make that choice.
The third category includes special-effects and creative filters. These can take many forms, from diffusion filters that soften highlights and create a subtle glow to filters designed to produce more unusual visual effects. Diffusion filters, for example, can be particularly interesting around bright light sources. Streetlights, neon signs, headlights, or sunlight filtering through trees can develop a soft glow around the highlights, giving the photograph a more atmospheric or dreamlike quality.
The key with creative filters is restraint. It’s very easy to see an effect and think, “That’s really cool,” and then immediately turn it up as far as possible. But in many cases, subtlety produces the more successful photograph. I generally prefer the viewer to notice the photograph first and the effect second. If the first thing they see is the filter effect, the filter may have become more important than the subject itself.
Why Put Filters on an iPhone?
This brings us to something that I find particularly interesting: using filters with an iPhone. At first, it might seem unnecessary. After all, modern iPhones have remarkably capable cameras, computational photography, and a tremendous amount of software built into the camera system. Why would you need a physical filter?
The answer is that software and physical filters approach the problem in different ways. A physical polarizer can alter reflections before the light reaches the camera. An ND filter can reduce the amount of light entering the lens before the exposure is made. These are optical changes taking place at the point of capture. And because the iPhone is so small and portable, adding a compact filter system can give you another level of creative control without having to carry a full-size camera system everywhere you go.
Think about walking through a city while traveling. You see a beautiful modern building with enormous glass windows. You pull out your iPhone, frame the photograph, and discover that the glass is filled with reflections. With a polarizing filter, you can rotate the filter while watching the scene on the screen and determine whether reducing those reflections improves the photograph.
Or imagine coming across a waterfall during a hike. You want the soft, flowing water that you might normally associate with a landscape photograph taken with a larger camera and tripod. An ND filter can reduce the light enough to allow a slower shutter speed, giving you the opportunity to record that movement in a very different way.
This is one of the reasons I think filters are particularly interesting for smartphone photography. The iPhone isn’t replacing the fundamentals of photography. It is simply putting those fundamentals into a much smaller package.
Think About the Photograph First
One of the biggest mistakes photographers can make with filters is thinking about the equipment before thinking about the photograph. It’s easy to get caught up in questions such as, “Which filter should I buy?” or “How many stops should my ND filter have?” Those are important questions eventually, but they shouldn’t be the first questions you ask.
Instead, start with the scene. What isn’t working? Are reflections preventing you from seeing the subject? A polarizer might help. Is there too much light to achieve the shutter speed you want? An ND filter might help. Do you want to show movement rather than freeze it? A longer exposure might be the answer. Are bright highlights too harsh and you want a softer, more atmospheric appearance? A diffusion filter might be worth experimenting with.
This approach changes the way you think about photographic equipment. Instead of buying gear because someone tells you that you need it, you’re choosing a tool because you have a specific photographic purpose for it. And just as importantly, there are plenty of situations where you don’t need a filter at all.
If the scene looks great without one, take the photograph. Don’t put a polarizer on simply because it’s sitting in your bag. Don’t use an ND filter just because you want to make a long exposure. And don’t add a creative effect if it doesn’t contribute something meaningful to the image. The goal isn’t to use more equipment. The goal is to have more control over the photograph.
Filters and the Creative Process
For me, this is ultimately what makes filters interesting. Photography is already a process of controlling light and deciding how you want the camera to interpret the world in front of you. You control your composition. You choose your perspective. You decide where to focus. You determine the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Filters simply add another layer of control.
A polarizer lets you make decisions about reflections. An ND filter gives you additional control over shutter speed. A long exposure lets you interpret movement differently. A diffusion filter can alter the way highlights are rendered. None of these things guarantees a better photograph, but they give you more possibilities. And that’s really what good photographic equipment should do.
Start Simple
If you’re new to filters, you don’t need to purchase a dozen different types and immediately fill your camera bag—or your iPhone accessory case. Start with one filter and learn what it actually does.
A polarizer is an excellent place to begin because its effect is something you can see immediately. Find some water and rotate the filter. Find a glass building and watch the reflections change. Photograph foliage and see how controlling reflected light changes the appearance of the leaves.
If long exposures interest you, experiment with an ND filter. Start with moving water and try different shutter speeds. Pay attention to the relationship between the amount of movement and the length of the exposure. Don’t simply look for the longest exposure you can achieve. Look for the exposure that best communicates what you want the photograph to say.
And if you’re interested in creating a more stylized appearance, experiment with diffusion and other creative filters—but start subtly. The more you experiment, the more you’ll begin to understand that filters aren’t magic accessories. They’re simply another way of controlling the light.
The Filter Isn’t the Photograph
Perhaps the most important lesson is that the filter itself shouldn’t become the subject. A successful photograph isn’t successful because you used a polarizer or because you managed to create a thirty-second exposure. It’s successful because those tools helped you create the photograph you envisioned.
That might mean seeing beneath the surface of a lake. It might mean removing distracting reflections from a glass building. It might mean turning a waterfall into a soft ribbon of moving water. It might mean transforming a busy city street into a quieter, more abstract scene. Or it might simply mean adding a little atmosphere to an otherwise ordinary photograph.
The filter is just the means to an end.
So the next time you’re out photographing and something isn’t quite working, don’t immediately think that you need a better camera. Stop and look at the scene. Ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish and what is preventing you from getting there.
Sometimes the answer will be a change in composition. Sometimes it will be better light. And sometimes, the answer might be a filter.
Whether you’re photographing with a full-size mirrorless camera or the iPhone in your pocket, the fundamentals remain the same: see the light, understand what it’s doing, and then decide how you want to capture it.
That’s where filters become much more than another piece of gear.
They become part of your photographic vision.
