Maven Talon Kickstarter
When most photographers hear the name Maven Filters, they probably think of camera filters. The company is now moving into a different area of photography equipment with the introduction of its Talon folding LED lights. Designed for photographers, videographers, and content creators who need portable lighting, the Talon series offers three models: the Mini, Pro, and Max. The Kickstarter campaign launches October 13, 2026, giving early supporters an opportunity to purchase the lights through introductory reward packages before general retail availability.
But before backing a Kickstarter campaign, there are several things worth considering. What makes these lights different? Which model is right for your needs? How much can you save by backing the campaign, and when can you expect to receive your product? I reached out directly to Michael, the owner of Maven Filters, to get answers to some of these questions.
A Different Approach to Portable Lighting
Lighting can make a significant difference in photography and video production, but traditional lighting equipment can take up considerable space. Depending on the setup, you may need to carry lights, stands, modifiers, power supplies, and other accessories. That can become inconvenient when you're traveling, working in a small space, or recording videos at home.
The Maven Talon takes a different approach with a folding design intended to make the lighting source easier to transport and set up. Rather than carrying a conventional bulky light, the Talon opens into a larger lighting surface while folding down for storage and travel.
For photographers, this type of lighting could be useful for photographing small products, illuminating close-up subjects, creating macro images, and adding light to a controlled shooting environment. For video creators, portable lighting can help improve the appearance of interviews, YouTube presentations, product demonstrations, and other recorded content.
Of course, the usefulness of any light depends on how you work. Output, color temperature, distance from the subject, light placement, and the size of the illuminated surface all affect the final result. The important question isn't simply how bright a light can be, but whether it provides the flexibility and portability you need.
Three Models: Mini, Pro, and Max
Maven is introducing three versions of the Talon, each aimed at a somewhat different set of priorities.
Maven Talon Mini: Portability First
The Talon Mini is the smallest model in the lineup, weighing just 178 grams, or approximately 6.3 ounces. Its compact size makes it an appealing option for photographers who want to keep their equipment lightweight and accessible.
The Mini operates at a daylight-style color temperature of 5400K. Maven's corrected maximum brightness specifications are 490 lux at one foot, 216 lux at half a meter, and 55 lux at one meter. It has an internal rechargeable battery, with a stated runtime of up to approximately one hour depending on operating conditions, and it can also operate using USB power.
A crush-resistant case doubles as a stand, providing a convenient way to transport and position the light. For photographers who work with small subjects or want a compact light for travel, the Mini may be the most practical option.
Its advertised Kickstarter starting price is approximately $129, subject to the reward tier and availability.
Maven Talon Pro: More Control Over Color Temperature
The Talon Pro offers additional flexibility through adjustable color temperature, ranging from 3200K to 5600K. This allows you to move between warmer light and daylight-balanced illumination, making it easier to work in different environments or match the lighting to the atmosphere you're trying to create.
The Pro's corrected maximum brightness specifications are 2,130 lux at one foot, 1,060 lux at half a meter, and 287 lux at one meter. It also includes a magnetic back plate and a utility hook to provide additional mounting options.
For photographers and video creators who regularly record indoors, the ability to adjust color temperature can be particularly useful. The surrounding light in a room may be warm, cool, or a mixture of both. Having more control over your lighting makes it easier to create a consistent appearance.
The advertised Kickstarter starting price is approximately $159.
Maven Talon Max: Prioritizing Output
The Talon Max is designed for users who want the greatest output of the three models. It operates at a daylight-balanced color temperature of 5600K, with corrected maximum brightness specifications of 4,340 lux at one foot, 2,010 lux at half a meter, and 543 lux at one meter.
Like the Pro, the Max includes a magnetic back plate and utility hook. Its folding design retains the portability that distinguishes the Talon series.
The Max may be worth considering when output is a priority and daylight-balanced lighting suits your work. If adjustable color temperature is more important, the Pro offers that additional control.
The advertised Kickstarter starting price is approximately $159.
One important point when comparing these specifications is to pay attention to measurement distance. Lux readings change considerably as you move a light farther away from the subject. These figures use Maven's corrected measurement distances, making it easier to compare the models on a consistent basis. Maximum lux alone, however, does not tell you everything about the quality of the light or how it will perform in your particular setup.
Is the Maven Talon Kickstarter Credible?
One of the most common concerns about crowdfunding is whether a product will actually be manufactured and delivered. A Kickstarter campaign is different from purchasing a product that's already in stock at a retailer. Even when a company has a finished design, production and shipping can encounter unexpected problems.
I asked Michael, the owner of Maven Filters, directly about the credibility of this campaign. According to Michael, the Talon lights are working products that have already been distributed to dozens of beta testers. He also explained that Maven has its production facilities ready and is waiting to place the production order.
Michael pointed to the company's previous Kickstarter campaigns, saying Maven has followed through on those projects. That experience, combined with the existence of working units, provides useful context for people considering backing the Talon.
Still, it's important to understand that these are the company's statements about its project and plans, not a guarantee that everything will proceed exactly as scheduled. Kickstarter supporters should review the campaign details, understand the terms, and be comfortable with the possibility of delays before committing their money.
Why Consider Backing the Kickstarter?
According to Maven, one of the biggest advantages of backing the Talon campaign is the introductory pricing. The company advertises savings of approximately 50 to 60 percent on selected Kickstarter rewards, with bundles offering additional value depending on what is included.
The advertised starting prices are approximately $129 for the Mini and $159 for either the Pro or Max. The exact amount you pay depends on the reward tier, the available package, and whether you choose a bundle or additional accessories.
Maven expects the Kickstarter to offer the best pricing, particularly through its initial VIP and early-bird rewards. Michael explained that these special offers have historically sold out quickly in the company's campaigns.
That makes the launch date worth noting if you're interested in a particular model. The campaign begins October 13, 2026, and is scheduled to end November 13, 2026. The best introductory rewards may not remain available throughout the entire campaign, so check the live Kickstarter page for current pricing, package details, and availability.
It is also worth remembering that a discount should never be the only reason to purchase a piece of equipment. Consider how often you'll use the light, whether its features fit your work, and whether the package offers genuine value for your needs.
When Will the Talon Lights Be Delivered?
Another important question is when backers can expect to receive their lights.
Michael explained that Maven estimates the manufacturing and fulfillment process will take approximately three months after the company receives the Kickstarter funds. Because the funds are not released immediately when the campaign ends, the overall timeline extends beyond the final campaign date.
Maven's published delivery estimate is currently April 2027. Michael indicated that an earlier delivery may be possible if everything proceeds smoothly, but the company has allowed additional time in its public estimate to account for potential production delays and the Chinese New Year holiday period.
For anyone considering backing the campaign, April 2027 is the date to plan around. An earlier arrival should be considered a possibility rather than a promise.
This is an important distinction. Backing the campaign may provide access to introductory pricing and an early production run, but it does not mean you'll receive the product immediately. If you need a light for a specific project in the next few weeks, purchasing equipment already in stock may be the more practical choice.
Will the Lights Be Available After Kickstarter?
I also asked Michael whether the Talon models would be manufactured only in limited quantities for the Kickstarter.
His response was that Maven intends to continue producing the lights if the campaign succeeds and demand supports ongoing production. In other words, the company does not currently intend for the Kickstarter to be the only opportunity to purchase a Talon.
However, the introductory reward tiers and the available quantities at those prices are limited. Missing an early-bird offer doesn't necessarily mean you'll never be able to buy the light, but it may mean paying a different price later.
Maven's expected regular retail pricing is approximately $249 for the Mini and $299 for the Pro and Max. These are anticipated prices and may change before general retail availability.
When comparing Kickstarter rewards, look beyond the headline discount. Consider the complete package, including the model, accessories, and any bundled products, so you can determine which option offers the best value.
Which Maven Talon Should You Choose?
The right model depends on how you intend to use it.
The Mini is the portability choice. Its low weight and compact form make it appealing for travel, small subjects, and situations where carrying additional equipment isn't practical.
The Pro is the flexible option for those who want to adjust color temperature. If you're recording YouTube videos, photographing products, or working in different indoor environments, being able to move between warmer and cooler light can be valuable.
The Max is the output-focused option. If you want the brightest model in the series and primarily work with daylight-balanced illumination, it deserves consideration.
Before deciding, think about the subjects you photograph, the distance at which you'll use the light, and whether adjustable color temperature is important to you. Those practical considerations are more useful than simply choosing the most powerful or least expensive model.
Final Thoughts
The Maven Talon introduces an interesting approach to portable lighting, combining a folding design with three different options for photographers and content creators. The Mini emphasizes portability, the Pro adds adjustable color temperature, and the Max prioritizes output.
The Kickstarter campaign offers an opportunity to purchase the lights at introductory prices, with Maven advertising substantial savings on selected rewards. The company says the products are already working units, with beta testers and production preparations in place. However, as with any crowdfunding project, buyers should understand that delivery estimates can change.
The campaign launches October 13, 2026, and is scheduled to end November 13. Maven currently estimates delivery around April 2027.
